What Is Xat?
I can never forget the words of a career counselor who came to my school when I was in Std. 10, guiding us as to what subjects we should take after the matriculation exam, he said that it does not matter whether you have an attitude for a particular thing, what is important is your aptitude, and gave a very nice example, he said you cannot become a singer just because you like (attitude), you need to have aptitude (skills). This simple proposition is the basic idea of MBA entrance exams, which has a sole purpose to evaluate the skills and mental makeup of a candidate, to pursue a highly specialized course like MBA as well as handle the pressure that are a part of the corporate world.
MBA course has become the “Chosen one”, every other individual; be it a commerce graduate or an engineering grad or even a working professional, all want to add this coveted degree in their resume. Every year a very large number of aspirants apply in some of the top ranked MBA colleges in India. But, it is neither feasible nor practically possible to accommodate all those who apply, due to limited seats, and so entrance tests like CAT, ...
... MAT or XAT are held. They aim on examining the intellect, skills and confidence of the candidates who dreams to be a part of some of the reputed management institutes like IIM, XLRI and other such A-list B-schools in India.
IIM is considered as the cream for graduates, and thus, CAT is regarded as one of the toughest exams, as it opens up the door for IIMs. However, there are also other colleges which are almost equivalent to IIMs, in term of offering quality education. One such institute is XLRI (Xavier Labor and Research Institute), for which the students have to clear an MBA entrance exam i.e. XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test). It is a twin sister of CAT, which like CAT aim son short listing the deserving candidates for admission in its flagship programs like BM (Business Management) and PMIR (Personnel Management and Industrial Relations).
Contrary to CAT, XAT has three sections which are divided into Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning as well as Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability and 20 minutes paper on essay. This primary focus of this exam (just like CAT) is screening candidates on basis on their merit. The examination tests the speed, accuracy, I.Q, confidence level, decisiveness and smartness, which are an integral part of a business leader’s personality. It actually decides whether the candidate can handle the stress they undergo as a part of their study in of premiere MBA colleges in India, including XLRI.
Like most of the MBA entrance exams in the country, XAT is scheduled on Sundays, particularly first Sunday of January every year (FYI: XAT 2012 will be held on 8th January 2012). Every correct answer in MCQ part is rewarded 1 mark. The negative marking in XAT has a slight twist. 1/3rd marks are deducted for first 5 wrong questions in each section & ½ for errors beyond 5 mistakes.
You need to prove your credentials, when you aspire to achieve something in your life. X.A.T is one such channel that gives to a chance to prove your potentials and gives you a entry pass to some of the top management institutes.
