Rameswaram – Trip to the Varanasi of South
Rameswaram is one of the holiest towns of India located in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu and is also an essential part of the holy ‘Char Dham’ pilgrimage. Every year thousands of tourists flock to the region to get the blessings of the God. The deep religious significance of Rameswaram has led it to be called the ‘Varanasi of South’. Rameswaram is also a highly revered region of India, as it is a popular belief that this is the place from where Lord Rama built a bridge (Ram Setu) across the sea to get to Lanka, to rescue his abducted consort Sita from the ruler of Lanka, Ravana.
Rameswaram actually sits on the Pamban Island also known as Rameswaram Island and is separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge. However, Rameswaram is the main terminus of the railway line from Chennai to Madurai and as such it is well served by the train services connecting Rameswaram to other regions in India. Other than that tourists and pilgrims can also reach Rameswaram by means of flight by boarding off at ...
... Madurai, the nearest airport from the region sitting at a distance of only 175 km.
Rameswaram being a sacred religious place, it is home to numerous temples and religious institutions, but other than that there are also several attractions that can be enjoyed like relaxing at the beaches, surfing in the waters, boating or nature walk. The glass boat rides offered at Pamban Bridge is in fact a must try. The glass bottoms of the boat enables people to watch coral reefs in the sea, but do carry an umbrella with you otherwise you’ll end staring at your own reflection rather than the beautiful reefs. An exciting place for nature and bird lovers is Dhanushkodi, located just 18 km away; it is well endowed with rich natural beauty and is known to be home to several species of birds.
Some of the holy sites of Rameswaram include Sri Ramanathswamy Temple, Agnitheertham, Gandamadana Parvatham, Sugreevar Temple, Satchi Hamuman Temple, Badrakaliamman Temple; The Five faced Hanuman Temple, Jada Teertham and many others.
For the comfortable accommodation of tourists and pilgrims there are several great quality hotels in Rameswaram across all budget ranges catering to every group of travelers. A restaurant named Ram Nivas is also a place worth visiting for some delicious and reasonably priced food. To know more about Rameshwaram and Hotels in Rameshwaram Visit HolidayIQ
