Without routers the world of internet would come to a halt. Requests to various applications, webpage’s, mail servers and other, more sophisticated environments such as virtual computing would remain just a dream.

So is a router?

These are devices that carry data packets, which could be simple pages to more complex files from one computer network to another. It typically behaves as an internet guide, reading the address from where the request is made and sending it across various networks till it reaches the requested destination.

At home, this device is used to connect the computer to internet, allowing the user to access internet for various tasks.

On the other hand, enterprise router or core router is used for large business enterprises and internet service providers to create extreme complex networks for various communication tasks. Internet or intranet, a router plays the role of directing requests to its proper destination. The router first identifies the request, by referring to the internet protocol address (IP address) which is unique to every computer, before processing it.
