Many households are wanting, and needing, to seek out the best deals on their purchases, as money for non-essentials is scarce and needs to be stretched as far as possible. Recent research by Legal and General shows that over one million households are worse off than they were a year ago, whereas the Telegraph reports that the average British household is dealing with a disposable income drop of £910 per year, compared with 2009.
The story for the average household in the UK seems to be that ...
... household budgets are becoming more and more difficult to manage, and there are several reasons for this.
Petrol
Rising petrol prices have long been a thorn in many hardworking families sides. An essential for many of us to get to and from work, petrol is becoming a considerable monthly expense that, for many, is getting more and more difficult to afford.
Edmund King, AA President said this in a recent press release: ‘There’s no downplaying the impact of record fuel prices on family’s and other people’s lives. Car owners are losing mobility as a consequence.’
However, while non-essential trips out can be cut, the cost of getting to and from workplaces is a bill that families and individuals simply can’t get away from.
Food
According to mySupermarket, the typical shopping basket in the UK costs six percent more that it did last year; yet some basic food staples have increased in price by a great deal more. Butter is 40 per cent higher in price, coffee is 20 per cent and pasta is 29 per cent, meaning that the basics many of us take for granted are putting the squeeze on household budgets.
As food prices have steadily been increasing, households have found their weekly shopping bill going up and up, and the bad news is that these price rises show no sign of reversing, or even slowing. According to the Observer, many leading food companies have said that they expect food prices to continue to soar, putting more pressure on the already squeezed British purse.
Utilities
Recently, all of the major utilities suppliers have announced price rises to come into effect before November; which comes just at the wrong time as forecasters have predicted a bitterly cold winter. Npower, Scottish Power, Birtish Gas, E.ON, EDF, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy have all raised their prices, so it seems there’s no escape for households, no matter which energy provider you are with.
Job Security
Just as households are struggling, many businesses are also struggling, which means that they are cutting wage bills in order to stay afloat. Many people have had their hours or wages cut and, as there’s a general shortage of jobs, have no choice but to accept the situation.
Taking a drop in income is the last thing that households need at a time when the basic cost of living continues to rise. Unfortunately, it is a reality for many people, and makes it doubly important that money is saved wherever it can be.
With all the financial doom and gloom that households are having to deal with, it’s safe to say that the average person in the UK is likely to be feeling more than miserable at the moment. Treats may be few and far between but they are likely to go a long way towards relieving some of the daily stress felt by hardworking households.
The great thing about Groupon is that it offers life’s little treats and luxuries at huge discounts, so Grouponers are finding that they can afford to indulge in the occasional meal out or fun activity.
