The country Ben Franklin went on to help found may not have heeded his advice well, but most of us could benefit from living a little more in tune with this maxim.

With that in mind, we give you… Seven cool tips for saving money on everyday things. You can start applying these straight away, so we’d like to think we’ll leave you a little richer at the end of today than you would be if you hadn’t come across this post!

1) Don’t play the lottery
You might get a tanner out of the lottery (face it you’re not going to win the big one) but given the chances, your lottery ticket isn’t worth the £1 price tag. If it was, they wouldn’t make money out of it. The value of a £1 lottery ticket is in fact £0.71 (Louis Barclay).
As for the chances of hitting all six numbers… that’s it’s as likely as picking the right single minute out of a period of 27 years (Radio 4 More or Less pod cast)

2) Take advantage of cash back sites
The simplest way to start doing this is to join the daddy of all cash back sites, Quid. It’s easy to use, and once you’re in you’ll simply see your ...
... cash back account start growing. Think of it as having a very good store card for pretty much everything you buy.

3) Cancel TV channels you don’t use
If you have a Sky or Virgin package, have a look at what you pay for and what you actually watch.
If pay for movie channels but only watch films on them once or twice a month, cancel with haste! You can just use their on-demand movie service, Best UK deals watch movies as often as you do now and save a tidy sum.
(movie channels cost in the region of £15 per month, individual movies on demand cost around £3-£4)

4) Cancel your landline
OK, it’s a radical one, but hear me out… is there anything your landline does that your mobile doesn’t?
There’s a legacy of feeling that a proper home ‘should’ have a landline, but does it need one? More and more people are doing without, and really, what are going to miss out on apart from the bill?

5) Change supermarket

Supermarkets are not all equal, though what they sell pretty much is. Don’t be loyal, by frugal!
To take the hassle out of comparing supermarket prices, use a grocery comparison service like my supermarket.
Given how much you spend on groceries each year – this one can really make for a significant saving.

6) Take care with transport
There are two good money-saving habits to get into with train travel.
The first is to plan ahead and book in advance. One of the ridiculous things about the price of train tickets in the U.K. is the huge difference in the price you local deals can pay if you book well in advance, from what you’ll fork out when you leave it to the last minute.
National rail make it easy to know when to jump in and grab your cheap fares, with this future travel chart which shows exactly when you can buy cheap advance tickets for each train line.
The second is to start using Thetrainline has exclusive deals on train tickets, often giving you reductions of 80% (again when you book in advance).

7) Buy your meat direct
This is one you probably haven’t heard before, but it’s a goodie…
Meat is, pound for pound, one of the most expensive items in most shopping trolleys. You can save a huge amount on quality meat by buying it direct from Westingourmet.
The obvious question: is this poor quality meat? No, it’s quality stuff. Westingourmet manage to make the huge savings by selling it in ‘wholesale cuts’. As they explain…
“By selling the majority of our meats in wholesale cuts, we are able to cut down on the cost of butchery and packaging.”
So it really is more for less by cutting out the middle man.
Now armed with those seven bank-balance-enhancing tips. Go forth and make Ben Franklin proud!
