Byod – The Risks It Brings To The Companies
The companies are facing an increased demand from employees to allow them to use their own devices for official purposes. This is popularly known as Bring Your Own Device or Byod. Some companies have shown reluctance to adopt this new trend and there are several valid reasons behind it. Let us explore the threats and risks of Byod and how companies can overcome them.
Security risk and Byod
The unwillingness of companies to adopt Byod is because of the increased security risk. With Byod the enterprise network is at a greater threat. Users can access the network from any device and this exposes the data. The mobile devices will be an easy target for hackers. Running multiple applications on these mobile devices may also jeopardize the company’s secured data system.
With Bring Your Own Device policy the TEM needs to be revamped. The employees are using the same device for both personal and professional reasons. The companies who pay a stipend for the usage stand to lose if they are unable to control the usage of devices.
Moreover the companies cannot allot the stipend to every employee. Depending on ...
... the nature of jobs, roles and responsibilities the stipend should be fixed. While for some jobs it is easier to determine the percentage of mobility required but for some roles it may not be so easy. There can be cases where the company loses by paying hefty stipends and cases where it needs aggressive pricing.
Productivity
Regarding productivity the companies have a greater apprehension. The excessive use of social media websites in workplaces has led many companies to ban these in the office. With company-owned devices it was easier to implement these policies. But when employees log in with their own devices it becomes difficult for companies to control the usage. The question of productivity getting hampered looms large for the companies.
On the other hand there are instances where the employees being able to choose their own devices and the applications they want to run have increased productivity. The employees are able to stay connected from anywhere they want. As more and more employees connect they are able to boost productivity.
Controlling the devices
The organizations find it extremely difficult to control the number of devices being connected to their enterprise network. All this makes the job really complicated for the IT department. Think about the unidentified mobile devices connecting the network and increased risk it entails.
In a nutshell the companies need to have a well defined policy to tackle risks posed by Byod.
