On October of this year, the Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act, better known as the long term care CLASS Act, has been canceled by the Department of Health and Human Services, citing “no viable path forward” regarding its implementation.

With its cancellation, many citizens, especially those who belong below the poverty level, are now worried about their future and how they would pay for the LTC services and other facilities that they might need.

CLASS Act was signed into law by President Barrack Obama March of last year, hoping that it would be the answer to the dilemma of the government regarding providing cheap but useful LTC plans for the public.

Unlike those who are financially capable of buying private LTC plans, majority of the United States residents find it hard to sustain and pay for the expensive monthly premiums that LTC plans offer. As a result, there are still 32 million residents who are uninsured and who need to decide on whether they would acquire one or not.

Originally, CLASS Act will have all working individuals enrolled in the program and their employers ...
... will deduct their policy premiums from their salary. However, there is also an option wherein the employer can pay half of their workers’ premiums, but this is not mandatory.

But sadly, the long term care CLASS Act was not able to satisfy the other factors that are needed in order for the program to push through, leading to its cancellation. Some thought that the idea behind the funding system of the program is not enough and is not certain to compensate for the LTC services that the policyholders might need several years from now.

Because of its unbelievable low monthly premiums, and the fact that some of the working individuals who are automatically enrolled in the program back out, the government feared that they might just put the public at greater risks of not being able to get the services that they need should they still continue to implement the program.

CLASS Act advocates were the first ones to mourn the cancellation of the program. Although they are aware of the consequences that might happen when the implementation of the CLASS Act still pushed through, they are still positive with regards to the benefits that it can give the public.

However, they cannot deny that such new measures may not just be right, especially now that the costs of LTC services and facilities continue to soar as the demand for LTC insurance policies increase.

But the public must not be worried because there are still some cheap policy options that they can still avail of. One good example is the Partnership program that is being offered to almost all the states in the country. It has cheaper monthly premiums plus two additional features that would certainly cater to the needs of its policyholders and give more advantages to them.

With the cancellation of the long term care CLASS Act, the public is now back on square one. Yet again, they have to find the most suitable policy option for their LTC needs without having to pay large amount of money for the monthly premiums. But the good thing is, the government, together with the insurance companies and private sectors that help educate the public regarding the importance of LTC policies, are not giving up to find other alternatives so that more and more Americans can experience the LTC insurance advantage.
