Pride: A Boon Or Detriment Of Society?

Does pride aid or hinder a person? If viewed as the emotion someone gets when achieving a goal, pride is thought to have a positive effect on them. But in many cases, pride is seen as a bad thing, or in some religions, as a sin.
Either way, pride is an emotion that one feels internally. A person can feel a negative kind of pride when they become too self-important, or a positive type when they have completed a difficult task. When examining the bad side of pride, we can see that it can hamper a person and we should ask how can we turn that kind of pride into something good? Moreover, what are ways we can help others feel better about themselves using self-pride?
Pride, like other personal hindrances, can be altered in a positive way. Assisting people do just that is what NXIVM and its founder Keith Raniere, do. Recently, one of my best friends went through a course with them that helps increase a person's potential and they have really started to show improvement in that area.
What I mean is we have comparable personalities, and while he's not quite the epitome of humility, the change is distinct ...
... enough that I can see a difference, and I am intrigued. My friend isn't nearly as competitive on winning an argument and said they can see when they're in the wrong. They treat wait staff with more consideration and don't act better than other manual laborers. Their confidence level has risen and they seem more at ease in their own skin. I've been wondering how someone can go from being rather conceited to feeling a more positive kind of pride.
I suppose the answer lies in whatever thing causes a person to be prideful to start with. It might be that a person's pride is inflated because a person is unconfident or afraid of an outcome or of being viewed a certain way. Since a person might not feel a certain way about themselves, they may try very hard to have other people to believe it about them. Many times, if the core of insecurity is gotten to, it can alter prideful behavior into a more humble outlook. Change can come if we look within ourselves and confront our insecurities so that we can rid ourselves of false pride and become better people.
