It is said you are what you eat. This saying applies to pets as well. The foods that a pet consumes, determines its health conditions, heftiness, skills and adoptability. So, pet owners need to make sure that their dearies are getting proper nutrition. Problem is we human beings can express all our problems that our pets couldn’t, albeit they face many health issues, which we do. Arthritis, hip and joint pains etc are found in pets also. Since a proper diet can ease many of these problems, pet nutrition should be thoroughly looked upon.

Usually, pet owners visit the local stores and purchase the nutritional products. They find scores of such products there in flashy packets with loud claims of high nutrition value. But how far these claims are true? For the well-being of their pets, owners need to have a good idea about suitable pet diet. Otherwise, they’ll be lured by the advertisements on pet products, which are in most cases concerned about their own profit, rather than the pet’s health.

First of all, the diet must be fresh and natural. It is best if raw feeding could be arranged. The food items that ...
... fall into this group should be selected as per the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) categories. A standard BARF diet consists of non human-grade food items like raw bones with 50% meats on them and human consumable items such as fruit, vegetable and dairy products. The ideal ratio between raw meaty bone and human-grade food is 70:30.

Since raw feeding is a vital part of pet diet, quality of the food matters very much. Pet owners are advised not to include any type of byproduct. Although raw feeding includes consumption of organs, not all types of organs and all parts of an animal’s body are consumable for pets. So, pet owners should select the food items with caution and include only those items, which are fresh and consists of high nutritional value. If pet owners suspect that their animals are not getting required amount of meat, they can increase the amount of RMB on the diet by arranging prey model diet.

The advantage of prey model diet is that the bones and organs are highly meaty. After the pet haunts down the game, it will eat the game’s heart, liver, backside organs etc. Since these organs carry enough amount of meat, the total meat amount on the diet reaches to almost 80%.

A comprehensive pet nutrition includes canned foods also. Canned milk, canned chicken are examples of canned food. Before purchasing, expiry date and the constituent ingredients need to be checked. Crude protein, crude fiber, calcium, phosphorus are all essential ingredients to comprise a proper canned diet for pets. But these ingredients should be present in optimal quantity, such as minimum percentage for calcium and phosphorus is ideally to be 1.2.

Actually, dogs and cats are two most common types of pet, and both of them are carnivorous animals. So prioritizing the protein need is essential. A very low percentage of pet diet can be vegetarian food.
