Upgrading Your Engine For Performance Enhancement
There are many ways to increase performance from your car, these methods are wide ranging and extensive, but some work better than others. It is up to you therefore to choose the one that will work best for your vehicle.
The act of engine tuning is the adjustment and modification of an existing engine, in order to get a different desired effect, when compared with standard tuning. Ever since the dawn of the motor car, people have had a fascination with modification and tuning in order to get an extra dimension of power or acceleration from their stock vehicle.
This desire to modify culminated in a whole subculture of tuning fanatics that are keenly interested in petrol and diesel tuning. This subculture is most commonly known as with the hot rod movements that started many years ago.
Common methods of tuning involve many different actions to produce performance upgrades, in order to gain speed on the track, or even to simply allow the car to drive more smoothly in day to day driving activities.
This desire for a common everyday smooth journey is often achieved with a simple engine tune up. This can ...
... be in the form of a service of the engine, in order to get it back to its original manufacturer specification and driving standard. Most modern cars will only need a few of these tune ups in their lifetime, when compared with older cars which may need them regularly to remain in a good state for driving.
A tune up may commonly involve the inspection of emission controls, replacement of air filters and any other filters that the car may have, a routine inspection of the ignition system components such as the spark plugs, contact breaker points, distributor cap and rotor. Additionally, the valve train may need adjustment, along with cylinder head bolts needing to be re-fastened. The carburettor idle speed and air-fuel mixture may also need adjusting.
Tune ups are seen as a preventative maintenance method, meaning that it can prevent problems arising with the vehicle, rather than waiting for a problem to begin and then fixing it. This method is far more effective, as fixing problems would cost far more than preventing them with a simple tune up.
For example, it is commonly expected that a car should have a spark plug replacement after either 30,000 or 100,000 miles depending on the type of plug that is fitted. This is because old or broken spark plugs can cause an engine to misfire. A misfiring engine can be a terrible thing for a car, potentially leading to a complete engine failure and the need for a complete engine rebuild; something that is clearly not desirable to anyone and can cost thousands of pounds to do.
If you want to make sure that your car is in good working order at all times, it is best that you perform routine maintenance as often as possible, in the form of engine tuning and diesel tuning depending on your engine type.
