We are now quite familiar with the fact that tail lights are not a single light but are in fact a cluster of lights that perform several functions. They inform of the presence of the car on the road at night. They also inform the driver of the car following if the brake pedal has been depressed with an aim to reduce speed. Besides these two important functions they also have turn signal lamps which indicate that the car is going to turn. And finally they have a small light that goes on when the car is being reversed.

One would think that with so many lights and so many functions being done by the tail light they were doing all that can be done to make our drive safe. But accidents still do happen and the need to innovate further remains. Therefore there are cars which have flashing stop lamps to help catch the attention of the driver of the car behind yours. The intensity with which tail lamps shine out is also increased in relation to the speed with which the car is slowing down, so if the car is going to slow down ...
... very fast the tail lamps will light up very brightly. This was all about augmenting the effectiveness of the stop lights. But efforts are on to augment the effectiveness of the basic tail lamp that just announces the presence of the car on the road.

There are now special fog tail lamps available that improve the visibility of the tail lights in conditions of poor visibility. These are bright red tail lamps that are able to penetrate the fog better. With cars getting faster the safety of a car gets more compromised unless suitable action is taken to upgrade the safety features of the car. The tail lights are an important safety feature, specially because they help someone else to brake in time. That is why third brake lights are a legal requirement in many countries. And we may have someone with particularly slow reflexes following us and we should provide for such a situation as well. Being safe is better than being sorry at a later time.
