One of the consistent themes of technical progress in the last few decades has been that products have become “intelligent”. It is not as if they have grown a brain inside them and have acquired the ability to think and reason but it is true that they are now able to “sense” their environment and based on the input they receive they are able to modify the output they are delivering. Often this is achieved by having a microprocessor incorporated in the product that can compute complex algorithms and help make the right decision.

For example cars have headlights that can sense if there is car approaching and if one is there it will automatically switch the lighting to a low beam one. And once the car has passed it will switch back to the full beam automatically unless there is another car that is now approaching. This means you can enjoy as much lighting as you can without causing glare problems for the drivers of the approaching cars. Such innovation makes the modern headlights much more refined than the headlights of old times ...
... which just accomplished the basic task of dispelling the darkness.

There are even headlights which can dynamically prevent a glare for the driver of the oncoming car by having an obstruction inside the headlight that shields the light from hitting the approaching car. This obstruction moves with the help of actuators as the approaching car keeps getting closer till it passes by. If the headlights use LEDs as a light source then instead of the obstruction the relevant LEDs are sequentially turned off so that the driver of the oncoming car does not get blinded by light aimed directly at the eyes.

Modern headlights continue to get better in ways that we cannot imagine but when we see the innovation we can immediately appreciate its value to our driving experience. And it is for this reason we should check out the latest headlights and tail lights to be sure we are not missing out on a great new product.
