When it comes to hats, the flat cap has a reputation as being both functional and, more recently, fashionable. However, this hasn't always been the case and the flat cap was traditionally worn by the working class. Traditionally made of wool, there was even a law passed which meant that between 1571 and 1597 every non-nobleman over the age of six legally had to wear a flat cap while outdoors on a Sunday.

Flat caps were once synonymous with the working class, especially in towns, but country nobility also wore variations of the peaked cap in order to enjoy a more relaxed and casual style of dress. These were typically referred to as slummers' caps because the wearer was seen to be slumming it in a working class iconic cap. Flat caps have been given many different names over time and a number of variations have arisen but, most recently, the flat cap has enjoyed resurgence as a popular fashion item.

The style has changed little in the past 600 years since flat caps were first introduced. They still consist of a cloth cap with small stiff brim at the front, although you can now buy them made from a variety of materials ...
... including leather and cord, as well as the more traditional wool, tweed, or cotton.

Designs, however, do vary dramatically. Greys and browns are among the more traditional colours that you can choose from but there are also numerous tartan variations as well as brighter, more fashionable colours. There are flat caps adorned by labels from major fashion houses as well as those worn by national sports and athletics teams, and there are even a few professional sportsmen who continue to wear flat caps to this day.

Traditional flat caps are still popular with the working classes but you are equally likely to find sportsmen and some of the modern fashion set wearing variations of the flat cap. There are many styles, colours, designs, and materials for you to choose from but you can always expect the stiff brim and should look for those hats with a smooth and comfortable silk lining.
