Inductive sensors are widely used in many different types of industries, they are used so frequently that they we actually neglect how useful these products are. This article is set out to give a brief synopsis on the functionality if the induction sensor. The article will then aim to inform you on the best places to get more information on this fascinating piece of technology.

Explanation on how inductive sensors work

An inductive sensor is a type of electronic proximity sensor; an inductive sensor has the ability to detect metallic objects without having to touch them. The sensor consists of an induction loop and an electric current, this electric current creates a magnetic field which collapses and generates a current that falls asymptotically toward zero from its original level when the electric current no longer occurs. The loop changes according to the material that it detects and as metals are more often than not inductors than any other material then the presence of metal is detected. The changes can then be detected by sensing circuitry, which can then set a trigger to another device that metal has been ...

Practical uses of an inductive sensor

The are many practical uses of an inductive sensor here is a list of the most common items that cannot function without the use of an inductive sensor:

* Metal Detectors – This is ne of the more obvious of answers but a metal detector relies heavily on an inductive sensor in order to work.
* Traffic lights – This is not so obvious but they can detect that cars are waiting at a red light and send a signal to help allow steady traffic flow.
* Car washes – They can detect that a car has entered the car wash and this start the programme. It is also useful for the wash cycle itself as it prevents the car from being damaged.

As you can see there are many practical uses for an inductive sensor, if you would still like more information on inductive sensors then this can be found by entering the keywords ‘inductive sensor’ into an internet search engine.
