Educational Reforms – Role Of Ib Schools In India
We might have read books or heard lectures on the importance of education and how it shapes the character of a child. But, unfortunately what we (or the experts) miss out is that there is an urgent need for educational institutes to bring about some reforms in the curriculum and pedagogy. We actually resist change and do not want to come out of our “comfort zones”, so even after so many years of independence, we are still taught the same curriculum that was taught to during the pre-independence years. However, IB schools in India are the pioneers in bringing about reformation in Indian educational institutes.
The way in which children are forced to mug up every bit of their lessons is actually quite funny. It might help to remember tables for life time, but I doubt it could help a child to understand the crux of any subject. It does what Swami Vivekananda says “Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there undigested, all your life.” International school curriculum is a knowledge-centric syllabus that focuses on making a child “learn” about the subject. It teaches ...
... him how and why the earth rotates and not merely that it rotates. Therefore, the curriculum is such that it does not make them stupid book-worms who cannot apply their brains to solve any problem.
Free-thinking is never encouraged by the school authorities, which is very regrettable. The curriculum and the teaching methods are such that the creativity and opinions of the student gets confined into the cocoon of knowledge that is practically of no use to them. IB schools in India makes sure that the innovative instincts in them do not die out, albeit they are encouraged to form an independent frame of mind which allows them to ask questions.
Asking questions will not only make them inquisitiveness [in a positive sense], but will also teach to them distinguish between the right and wrong. Thus, the international school curriculum helps the child to break his shell and explore new avenues of knowledge.
Teachers play an important role in shaping the personality of a child. In most Indian schools, the recruitment of teachers are done either on basis of quota or by some recommendations, regrettably it is not done on the basis of the teacher’s capabilities and aptitude. IB schools in India have set benchmarks for the recruitment of teachers.
The would-be teachers are required to possess qualification and certificates that are equivalent to the international norms and educational forums. These teachers have to pass through a number of tests that check their aptitude and attitude towards teaching as well as how to train a student and above all to handle and grasp the international school curriculum that is quite difficult. Therefore, the teachers are selected on their merits and intelligence, thus the students will get their fundamental learning experience from a person who is well versed as well as well equipped with the sound knowledge about their respective subjects.
Things that are obstinate to adapt and amend with changing trends get washed away or fade out with the passing time. The present circumstances in the majority of Indian schools would at some point of time give rise to a similar situation where the educational system will become a subject of mockery. It is high-time to adopt the educational reforms that has been brought by IB school in India.
