My first place for news about the death of a famous person is Facebook. I can realize why thousands of people mourning the loss of an individual, and in many cases people do. Many times it's a pop star, or a celebrity whose death people mourn; Princess Di and Michael Jackson come to mind. On the flip side, what about when society rejoices over the death of a person?

The revelation about Bin Laden's death was on my newsfeed; the first time I'd seen it. A lot of my Facebook friends, who seemed to be so friendly and sympathetic, posted about how excited they were about the death of Bin Laden. Some of them took it a step further, using swear words to describe what they thought of him. This was the sort of stuff that took up most of my wall that day. I simply "watched" as only a small number of people ventured to voice the opinion that any human's death isn't a reason for celebration; this brought out strong objections from others.

There was a time, not so long ago, in which I may have participated in the celebration. The evil guy was bagged, right? Justice had prevailed, right - Right??

But now, ...
... I feel about it in another way. Since starting these innovative courses, I've been thinking more compassionately lately. I began thinking about the kind of person I am, if I'm happy about someone passing away, when I took these new classes from NXIVM, created by Keith Raniere.

Perhaps there's another way to think about it? Let's say that Bin Laden was as vicious as they say he was. And that he killed and tormented a lot of people. It might be better to think about why these kinds of actions still exist. In what way is each person responsible for the situation? Should one act of violence be followed by another?

It boils down to utilizing the same thing to try to get rid of another type of wrong. I can't help but think, if we as a society celebrate the death of another person, no matter how BAD that person was, what does it say about how we see our own humanity?
