Stopping Rust On The Woodman's Pal
There are a few people that seem to think a rust filled ax is nostalgic and quaint. However, for people that value their possessions and want to keep everything in top shape, rust is the biggest concern of any metal-based tool.
Why You Need the Woodman's Pal free of Rust
First and foremost an item with a sharp blade, such as Woodman's Pal, will work better when it is free of rust. Secondly, it will help the blade to look good for years. And finally a properly maintained blade will actually extend the useful life of the tool.
How to Prevent Rust
There are actually several types of products that can help prevent the onset of rust.
Light oils made for machinery, such as WD-40, can be used to clean the blade after use and actually stop rust from forming.
One of the preferred materials for campers and outdoorsmen is gun oil. Gun oil will lubricate, clean and inhibit rust on a Woodman's Pal in most all temperature ranges.
In a pinch, some people will use motor oil. Even used motor oil can be used if applied in a light coat. Most people prefer ...
... to use the lighter weights such as WD5 so that the oil does not get gummy in the cooler temperatures.
Many carpenters have long been fans of using wax to take care of their tools. Some people buy commercial wax made for tool care and others simply use the wax designed for cars. Wax works really well in the south where there is a lot of humidity in the atmosphere.
Steps for Keeping your Woodman's Pal Free of Rust
Follow this outline to keep your tool in good shape and to store it properly for later use.
Preparation of the blade:
Use a cloth or towel to dry the blade completely
Clean away any sap or pitch using turpentine or paint thinner
Coarse steel wool can be used to get rid of any surface rust
Application of material:
After picking your desired material, rub it on the blade with fine steel wool if you are using a paste like wax
For oils you can use a cloth to rub on the blade
If you choose a grease you can simply apply it with your fingertips
Finishing:
You do not have to buff the blade to prevent rust, but it won't hurt if you want to have a shiny blade.
Remove any excess wax, oil or grease
Cover the blade to keep people safe
Place the woodsman's Pal in a dry place
It is important to note that it may not be possible to prevent every millimeter of surface rust. Over time most blades will show a bit of use without hindering the blade's effectiveness. These steps are designed to prevent the deeper type of rust that gets into the blade and reduces its worth as well as its use.
