In our inventory of ribs for sale we had taken in a used humber 5.5m destroyer from 2008 a few weeks ago and I decided we would use it for a family holiday off north west wales around Barmouth and Shell Island, the outboard engine was an evinrude etec 115hp which I have been dying to test for some time so it would serve a double purpose. The rib boat was well appointed with a single jockey helm seat situated just forward of midships and there were 2 jockey pods behind it side by side. First thoughts on the package were the seating - not enough of it, its very rare in ribs for sale that there are only three people in a 5.5m, if (as this one was) it’s a family sized 5.5m, I would have expected seating for 4/5 people in this humber rib. The trailer was an indespension roller coaster 3 and the trip down went without incident, it towed well. Launching was a piece of cake as the slipway we used at Shell Island has a very calm harbor. Once the rib was in the water I started the engine whilst my wife (expert trailer reverser who would put most men to shame!) parked the car and trailer. The engine I noted was quiet for a DFI 2 stroke, ...
... there are lots of outboards for sale around 115hp and this choice can be overwhelming to the prospective buyer. My preference has always been for the mariner 115hp optimax outboard or the new yamaha F100 outboards for sale. But this evinrude 115 etec sounded sweet. Immediate start, no smoke, and an even idle from cold, good so far.

My wife was soon back on board and we set off for barmouth - a 15 mile journey which I was quite looking forward to. The water when we got around the headland was far removed from that in the calm harbor, in fact it was anything but calm, we were faced with a WSW wind in force 4/5 giving us a swell of 1m and a rough chop to boot, white horses were around and it looked like PERFECT rib test weather!! I opened the throttle to 3000rpm and headed straight into the swell, the raised bow on these ribs for sale really comes into its own now, cleaving the swell like butter with the engine trimmed in tight to the transom, a slightly rough ride but no more than expected given the sea.

Continued in my blog for this week.
