I loaded up the engine for a quick spin before getting my fishing gear in.
The tohatsu outboards MFS9.8A3 engine started 3rd pull and there was no smoke from being laid down - a good sign, I let it warm up by the shore as I went to fetch my life jacket. On my return the engine was idling nicely with no hint of stalling (although still a little lumpy). I had the 9.8hp tohatsu engine in the 3rd shallow water drive position so I pushed off shore and jumped into the seapro HD inflatable boat, whacked her into reverse and got us free of any underwater obstacles, once in deeper water I dropped her down, tilting and shallow water drive is simple with this engine, just one lever to engage/dis-engage the reverse lock and one lever to select the tilt angle, the trim is altered with the industry standard trim angle pin. Now to some gearshift tests (don’t do this at home as it wears the corners of the clutch). Easing into and out of gear is not recommended on outboard engines of any size, gearshift should be operated quickly and positively due to the dog clutch which all outboards employ, however, I have seen lots of people doing ...
... just the opposite so I like to do it wrong when I am testing a new outboard. The new tohatsu MF9.8A3 S crunched a little going into both forward and reverse when eased in, something that the mariner outboards F9.8M does not do due to its easy to use twistgrip gearshift and throttle, it seems you cant make the gears crunch on that one! Of all the outboards for sale the mariner outboards 8hp to 20hp has the most intuitive gearshift/throttle setup on the market, it just cant be done wrong. Of the two outboards for sale the mariner outboard is more expensive than the tohatsu outboard.

Next it was time for load testing and some more stall testing, the engine was accelerated hard in forward gear, then the throttle was shut off immediately, this was done 3 times - no stall and the engine was almost on the plane before shutoff each time. I went back to get my fishing gear and then set off for the south end of the water, the day was ebbing and the wind had died to a whisper, the water was like glass and as I inched up the throttle checking for flat spots in the rev range, of which there was just a hint at 3000rpm but not such that anybody would notice, as the rev counter hit 3500rpm my trusty old seapro 310HD inflatable boat popped up onto the plane and the speed increased fro 6.9mph to 12.5mph with no increase in throttle, I inched the twistgrip up to WOT (wide open throttle) slowly, smooth power increase, up to 5800rpm and a respectable top speed of 21mph. That concluded the test, now where were those elusive brownies?!
