They often provide essential services across a network, either to private users inside a large organization or to public users via the internet, for example, in a computer when you enter a query in a search engine present online, the query is sent from your computer over the internet to the servers that store all the relevant web pages, from where the information would be processed and through the application server the required information would be provided by the computer to the professional asking for it.

The results are sent back by the server to your computer, therefore, acting as the host between the information stored within the computers and the engineers in need of the information. Basically it acts as a host helping one find their way in the world of computer and makes the search easy, as one needs to just type in keywords with regard to the query, rest would be taken care by the computer to provide the professional the right information and help him lead to it easily.
