Facebook’s New Application – “download Your Information”

Recently Facebook announced a new feature that allows facebook users to download a copy of their profile and content. Yet this feature is only available for some users. Facebook introduced this feature mainly for users who wish to preserve their memories created on facebook.

This feature permits users to port their data from facebook in a zip file. That is why this feature is called as "Download your information". In a downloadable zip file, users get HTML files which include their total profile, wall, event history, messages, notes, friend's list, picture .jpg files, .mp4s of their videos, and index file for navigating the content. The data obtained than can be used as a diary, or to replace other
information from a hard drive crash or stolen computer.

For accessing this feature, simply go to Account>Account Settings and then Download your Information and click "learn more". By clicking it, you will be shown a description of what your download will include, a security warning, and a privacy warning stating that the file will contain sensitive information and so users should take proper precautions while ...
... storing, sending, and uploading it to other services.

By clicking "Download", the button will change its name to "Pending" and you will be informed that you will receive the download link thru e-mail. It will take more time if your content is more but gradually you will receive an e-mail from facebook saying - Your download is ready with a link back to the Download your information page. After completing some security tests that includes re-entering the password, you will be allowed to initiate the download the zip file, coming from bigzipfiles.facebook.com URL.

Once it is downloaded, unzipped and opened, you will be able to see folders of HTML files, photographs, videos, a README.txt stating when and by whom the file is downloaded, and an index.html file. Inside the folders there are parts of a user's profile which can be opened by you and navigated through the index.

The HTML folder contains the complete profile details, a reverse ordered wall posts, status updates and all other content, current friends list in alphabetically order, Notes created by the user, the events details with total descriptions of each event, a thread of all of a user's sent and received messages, separate html files for each of the albums created by the user including the picture caption, tags, and comments, and all the videos uploaded by the user which can also be played within the html file linking locally to the downloaded videos.

The things which are not present in the downloaded content are - friend's information, Installed applications list, list of pages that user holds as an admin, group's content, and the facebook questions data.
