Fall Is Great Time For West Chester Landscaping
A lot of people are under the impression that the best time to begin nurturing a lawn is in the spring when the sunshine and rain is prevalent. However, work done in the fall of the year is actually just as important. Preparing the lawn properly for the winter will help produce a lovely yard when the birds begin chirping again. Here are some general West Chester landscaping tips to follow to get ready for the fall and upcoming winter.
Aeration
This is a process that helps nutrients, air and water move throughout the soil in a better manner. Soil cores are removed and compaction of the dirt is reduced. It also helps to get rid of thatch which is collection of organic matter just above the soil but still under the grass. Thatch will lead to a weakened root system in the grass and make the grass less healthy.
Seed
If you would like to add a new kind of grass to your yard, or if your current grass appears rather thin, then seeding could be a great boost to the yard when done in the fall. It is important that the soil is properly tested ...
... first before beginning any seed project. The test will help you determine how much fertilizer will need to be used as well as the type of seed that will perform best in your yard. It is also important to apply the seed in the correct amount in order to avoid damaging the soil and killing your efforts at growing new grass. A West Chester landscaping company can help you with the testing as well as the seed application if you need help with the manual labor.
Fertilize
Besides getting the right kind of seed, adding the right type of fertilizer is a great way to improve the health of a lawn. Applying the fertilizer once in September or October, and then again in November or December will give much needed nutrients to the grass system and sustain the health throughout the winter. It is best to choose a product that has a slower than average release. This will help the nutrients to get dispersed over a longer period of time and increasing the root system’s health rather than giving a short boost at once.
Water
Regardless of the lower temperatures in the fall season, grass will still need a certain amount of water in order to flourish. Make sure the lawn is getting a minimum of one solid inch of water each week. If there is considerable rainfall in your area you can get a rainfall gauge to put out in the yard and measure the amount of water that your yard is getting.
Leaf Removal
It is also important to keep the lawn clean of leaves in order to keep plenty of oxygen to reach the grass and roots. The leaves should be raked or blown no more than 14 days after they have fallen in order to promote proper air flow. Once again, a West Chester landscaping company can help you with this chore if the manual labor is too much for you or too time consuming.
