Becoming A Professional Telecommuter
Freelancing, or working as a contractor for an individual or a company, can be a difficult, but very rewarding job that has been growing in popularity in recent years. The advent of the internet has allowed freelancers to take their work home, no longer forcing the freelancer to ever work at the company office. This is a tremedous benefit for both the company and the worker, as working from home is one of the most wanted aspects of any position.
But what kinds of projects are available for telecommuting positions, and what tools and skills does one require in order to become a great telecommuting employee?
Telecommuters can do almost any job that necessitates a PC. These positions include almost anything from creating content for websites to doing graphics design jobs to creating scripts, to overseeing the merging of multiple systems. If a personal computer is necessary for the contract, it can surely be completed outside of the office, and there is probably going to be a telecommuter who specializes in that style of project.
The kind of individual who makes a dependable telecommuter is a self-motivated ...
... individual. This is especially true if you are a telecommuting freelancer. Freelancers need to be able to be decisive. Since the individuals who accept freelancers are almost always directors, they often lack the technical understanding to be able to help a software designer with detailed instructions on code. Thus, freelancers are required to be very knowledgeable, and know how to obtain the answers to problems that may arise.
Additionally, freelancers are required to have the necessary software in-house, or have them given by their employer. Very often, software such as word processors for writers and programmers are available on the net, however there are a few projects which often need expensive photo imaging programs or expensive compilers which are specifically used by a given company. If they require you to work with a specific version of software, it potentially be up to you, as a telecommuter, to buy the tool on your own though this is typically rare.
While it may not seem like a good job, telecommuting is a wonderful career for individuals with writing, programming, and organizing skills. Winning bids on projects may appear unpleasant to you, you should find that your abilities and skills are in demand after you get positive commentary on your work. That should allow you to charge greater fees for your work and make even more money.
When first getting started as a telecommuter, it is best to bid on assignments that you know you can do very well. This way you can ensure that you will not find many problems during the course of the contract, and that will lead to great comments on your profile, and higher paying projects, the next time.
