Timbuctoo and Smartsville: These two Old West towns of Northern California played an essential role during the Gold Rush period of the mid 1800’s. Timbuctoo, once the large town in Yuba County, was home to the Wells Fargo Office, which was responsible for holding and shipping millions of dollars worth of the gold that was extracted from the rich California land. Today, the remnants of the Wells Fargo Office can still be visited. Just a few miles east of Timbuctoo via Highway 20 lies Smartsville, home of the Church of Immaculate Conception and the Union Church, built in 1861 and 1863 respectively.
