How Did Jesus Share The Gospel In Evangelism?

In John chapter 4:7-26, we see an example of how Jesus talked with people about the gospel. Lets look at the four main points that summaries how Jesus took the Woman at the well through the gospel.

First of all Jesus starts in the natural realm

When you want to witness to people and bring up eternal matters, it can be good to start on natural things. This builds some rapport with the other person and helps them to open up. Most people don’t open up until they sense you are friendly and nice.

Next Jesus swings into spiritual matters

This can often be the hardest step, but it’s vitally important to bring the conversation around to spiritual things. It gets harder and harder to swing the conversation the longer you wait. Bring up a Christian story in the news, or use a creative gospel tract to break the ice. Evangelism tracts are a great way to bring up the gospel. The third point is to bring up God’s law

When sharing the gospel we need the other person to understand what sin is, and their need to repent. To see our need of repentance we need to see ourselves in truth. Most people believe they are good enough to go to Heaven on their own merit. But we know that we’ve all sinned and fall short of God’s glory, and that even our righteousness is but fitly rags before God. Jesus said that unless our righteousness exceeded that of the Pharisees we couldn’t get to Heaven. His point was that we can’t get there on our own. We need the righteousness of Christ. So by taking people through God’s law; the ten commandments, we can show them how far short they are from what God requires.

Also make sin personal. We need to understand that we’ve sinned against God and we personally deserve Hell. It’s easy to say that everyone has sinned, but until we realize that our own sin put Jesus on the cross we won’t understand the good news of the gospel and the value of Evangelism Tracts. Finally reveal Jesus as Savior

Once someone understands that they deserve Hell because of their sin, we can show them how they can find forgiveness. If they don’t understand they’ve sinned against God, they won’t understand why Jesus died on the cross. But once they know they’re lost, they can seek to be found. At this stage we can magnify the cross, and the payment Jesus made for us. We can tell them of God’s love in sending Christ to die on our behalf. And if the person knows they’re lost, they will cling to Jesus for mercy.

We must always remember that Salvation is a work of God. We can’t make someone a Christian by getting them to repeat a prayer after us. They need to call out to God themselves. Many people think they’re going to Heaven because they’ve prayed a prayer, but they live and practice sin on a daily basis. God is after a contrite and repentant heart. One that naturally cries out to Him for mercy and salvation. Our job is to simply and faithfully deliver the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
