If You Think That Health Insurance Costs Too Much Then Think Again
A staggering one out of five adult Americans consider that they are unable to afford adequate health care according to the latest information released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). So, are you one of the more than forty million people who are not able to sleep peacefully because of the fear of not being able to cope with the cost of medical treatment should you have an illness or accident? More importantly, do you have to be one of the forty million?
The report of the CDC which was published in 2007 and explored health care across the United States looked in some detail at various aspects of health care and discovered that:
1. 10% of people cannot currently afford the cost of prescription medication.
2. 10% of people put off medical treatment as a result of the cost.
3. No fewer than almost 1 in 3 young people aged between 18 and 24 do not have a normal source of medical treatment or health care insurance.
4. 10% of people aged between 45 and 64 do not have a normal source of medical treatment and roughly fifty percent of these people suffer from hypertension, serious heart problems ...
... or diabetes.
5. One out of 5 individuals below the age of 65 are uninsured for at least part of every year, with the majority of these being uninsured throughout the year.
A lot of Americans are lucky enough to get health insurance cover for themselves and their families through schemes operated by their employer, however escalating costs are forcing more and more employers to cut back on their group health care plans or to close them altogether. There are however also many millions of Americans who do not qualify for cover from their employer and who need to make arrangements for themselves. It is for this latter group that health care insurance is generally said to be simply too expensive.
But should you dismiss the idea of purchasing medical insurance out of hand merely because you think that it is too expensive? Health insurance plans come in numerous shapes and sizes and, in spite of the fact that a traditional indemnity fee-for-service plan can be expensive, there are a number of affordable options.
In simple terms medical insurance falls into two broad categories comprising disability policies and medical expense policies. The former is designed to cover your lost income if you are not able to work because of disability and the latter provides cover for the cost of medical treatment arising out of injury or accident.
Each of these forms of medical insurance can be purchased as an individual plan or separately and individual plans can again be broken down to cover particular areas like accident coverage, basic medical expenses, major medical expenses, hospital care and a great deal more.
As if this were not enough, cover nowadays can be provided by not only traditional insurers, but also by various group organizations, companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations, each of which can offer a wide range of plans with payment options to suit almost any budget.
If you are frightened off by the thought that you simply cannot afford to purchase health insurance then think again. You might not be in a position to buy a comprehensive plan covering every possible eventuality but it is a sure bet that you will be able to locate a plan which will give you sufficient cover to provide you with some peace of mind.
