The Gujarati Matrimony celebrations for the Hindu community start a few days before the actual day of wedding. Most the family members from the bride and groom sides are involved in the wedding process. A number of pre-wedding and post wedding rituals takes place in a Gujarati matrimonial.

The Gujarati marriage rituals start with a prayer ...
... services to Lord Ganesha. The family members of the boy and the girl come together and perform the Ganesh puja. Another prayer ritual, the Griha Shanti puja is done for a happy married life of the bride and the groom. Matching of astrological stars and horoscopes are done by the Hindu Gujarati before finalizing a wedding. Jaan is another important pre-wedding ritual where the bridegroom comes at the bride’s place to receive blessings from his mother-in-law.

There are many rituals in a typical Hindu Gujarati Matrimony on the wedding day. The wedding day customs in a Gujarati Matrimony are detailed. The rituals are conducted by a priest or archarya. Important rituals are Kanyadaan, Hasta Milap, Saat Pheras and Saptapadi. In the Kanyadaan ritual, the father gives away the girl’s responsibility to the groom. The groom holds the girl hands and accepts her responsibility at all times.

In a Gujarati Matrimony, there are many post-wedding rituals too. The Vidaai is the farewell ritual when the girl’s family bids her goodbye. Another important ritual is the Ghar nu Laxmi. This is the welcome ritual for the bride in her new house. The mother in law welcomes her with a traditional Aarti.

Like any other in Wedding celebration in India, the bride and groom in a Gujarati Matrimony wears traditional wedding attire for the various rituals and functions. The bride wears saris in red, pink or any other brighter color. Wedding saris of Gujarat are known as Panetar. This is a traditional bridal wear for the state of Gujarat and mostly Hindu community brides wear this on the day of wedding. The red border, done in bandhini style, a typical handwork from the state itself, easily identifies Panetar saris. The body of the sari is mostly white. Another type of sari is the Gharchola variety, which is also worn by some Gujarati brides. The Gharchola saris have crisscross pattern in bandhini work and have in between gold squares. Most of the brides wear the traditional color red on the wedding day, but in the recent times, colors like green, pink and blue are also finding place in the bridal wear. Some brides also wear lehengas on the wedding day.

The Gujarati matrimony functions also see the groom wearing traditional Indian clothes. For the wedding rituals, the groom wears dhoti and kurta. Colors preferred for the wedding ceremonies are usually fawn, cream or lemon yellow. Some groom also puts a red bandhini dupatta around the neck to complement the look. With the changing times, some grooms wear western styled suit on the reception party. The reception is held after the wedding rituals are over.
