The rich history of coffee can be dated all the way back to the mid 1400’s. This is when an Ethiopian Sheepherder started using the “red berries” from a bush to create what is now known as coffee. Coffee has come a long way since, now having hundreds of different flavors and blends. Currently, the Jamaican Blue Mountains are one of the most famous regions for producing coffee. Companies such as Reggie’s Roast Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee have coffee farms in the Jamaica used to create their gourmet coffee. Reggie’s coffee roasters are located domestically in Linden, New Jersey where some of the best coffee beans are generated. There are different types of certifications that coffee companies acquire to improve the quality of their product. What are some?

The first coffee certification that will be discussed is the Bird-Friendly Coffee Certification. This certification was created by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and has grown to be quite popular among coffee farmers. To be considered for this certification a company must first be organic certified. After this is achieved there is additional criteria ...
... that needs to be met. First, the farms must have a minimum of 40% shade coverage. This ensures habitats for wildlife to live in. Also, the farm must have at least 11 different species of shade trees. To be considered for this certification a company must first contact the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. They will then send an inspection agency to see if standards are met. The company must pay for the inspection as well. This is one certification that some premium coffee companies acquire to advance their brand name.

Sometimes certifications are needed depending on the coffee growing region. This is the case with coffee grown in the Jamaican Blue Mountain. Reggie’s Roast has acquired a Certification of Origin from the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board. This certification makes sure that the gourmet coffee is grown in specific elevations and regions of the Jamaican Blue Mountains. It must pass these guidelines in order to be considered Blue Mountain Coffee. There are a number of assessments that are done including colourmetric assessment, bean size assessment, defects assessment, and moisture analysis. The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board does these routinely. Passing all of these examinations are required in order to be considered Jamaican Coffee.

There are a variety of certifications that coffee companies may acquire. Some can depend on the origin of the coffee and some can deal with environmental issues. Reggie’s Roast Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is proud to say that the Jamaican Coffee Industry Board certifies their product. This verifies the rarity of their premium coffee.
