Why Do We Still Love A Phone Call?
Considering there are so many ways to keep in touch nowadays, it is perhaps surprising that so many of us still use the phone. This article explores the reasons why this is the case, and why we’ll never let go of the telephone.
So how often do you use the phone? If you’re like many people you probably use your mobile a lot more than the landline, but you still wouldn’t go without your BT Telephone or whatever phone you happen to have in your home, would you?
The fact is that speaking to someone on the phone allows you to have a far more in depth conversation than you could have any other way. It’s certainly nice to get a letter from someone every now and then, but how many people actually write letters anymore? In truth we are far more likely to send emails because they reach their destination immediately. But even then they don’t replace the humble phone call.
This holds true for businesses as well as personal calls. We might get a better response if we call a client and speak to them rather than sending a rather impersonal email. It depends on the situation and the client of course, but in ...
... any case you will usually have a better conversation – a two way conversation of course – if you resort to the phone rather than just sending an email. You can bounce ideas off one another and discuss a situation just as you would if you were speaking face to face. It isn’t likely to be something we give up on anytime soon.
The same applies to personal conversations. If you have a friend or relative who lives abroad, it’s certainly good to keep in touch with the help of occasional emails and pictures sent over the internet. But nothing beats a phone call, even if you do have to arrange it for a strange time so the time difference is taken into consideration. The more you think about the idea of using your BT Telephone instead of sending emails or even using instant messaging all the time, the more you understand why phone calls will never fall out of fashion.
Of course you might question whether the rise and rise of the social networking sites could have a profound effect on the way we contact each other. But instead of making phone calls less popular they simply give us alternative ways to keep in touch that we can use alongside our more traditional ones. Let’s say for example that you want to get in touch with a relative abroad. You could send them occasional messages online to keep in touch, and agree to have a weekly or monthly phone call to really have an in depth chat.
Put simply, nothing beats a phone call. If you really stop to think about it, you’ll know how much better you feel after talking to someone on the phone instead of sending them an email.
