Sony SDX-900V drive uses helical-scan technology for data read-write operations. Sony SDX-900V drive is not only compatible with AIT-4 tape cartridges, but it also offers its users the backward compatibility with AIT 3, and AIT 2 and AIT 1 media. First two AIT generations AIT-1 and AIT-2 are read-compatible, while the AIT-4 and AIT-3 media are read/write compatible. Sony has introduced a new cooling mechanism that protects the component of AIT-4 drive from dust particles and airborne contamination. A special cooling fan pulls air over the circuit boards that produce heat. A built-in shield prohibits dust particles from entering the head/tape interface and tape path.
