In order to accommodate and manage the burgeoning amounts of mission critical data, the business enterprises require higher capacity and more powerful backup mediums. AIT (advanced intelligent tape) is a versatile backup storage format that is widely used by the data centers, financial industry and government agencies. AIT tape technology has gained a reputation for higher capacity and superior performance in a cost and space saving media standard.

Sony, a global leader in data storage industry, offers a complete portfolio of AIT tape devices. Sony SDX-900V AIT-4 drive provides you greater flexibility and support for the industry leading backup software & applications. Rigorous engineering and vast technical experience has enabled Sony to develop this high performance SDX-900V drive that provides unparalleled performance in all demanding environments.

Sony AIT-4 tape stores up to 520 GB compressed and 200GB native information.

Sony AIT-4 drive efficiently compresses the data by using the ALDC (Adaptive Lossless Data Compression) at ratio of 2.6:1. The drive has a new innovative head-cleaner ...
... system that increases the head life. It is an automated cleaning system that ultimately reduces the requirement for periodic cleaning. At 24 MB/s native speed, the data managers can store 86.4 GB data in one hour.

Sony SDX-900V drive uses helical-scan technology for data read-write operations. Helical scan technology assures higher read-write efficiency, increased bit density and low cost per GB as compared to other recording technologies. Sony SDX-900V drive is not only compatible with AIT-4 tape cartridges, but it also offers its users the backward compatibility with AIT 3, and AIT 2 and AIT 1 media. First two AIT generations AIT-1 and AIT-2 are read-compatible, while the AIT-4 and AIT-3 media are read/write compatible. This is an additional advantage provided by the Sony AIT-4 drive that allows you to use the previous generation AIT media tapes.

Sony AIT4 drive offers the robust WORM (write-once read-many) mechanism that strengthens the data protection and reduces the likelihood that your sensitive information will be unintentionally erased or maliciously erased. The WORM technology also helps to shorten the data access time, and provide 20 time cost advantage as compared to the hard disk and optical based backup technologies. SDX4-CL is an intelligent cleaning cartridge developed by Sony. It is ideal for AIT-4 tape drives. The Sony cleaning cartridge automatically senses the condition of tape head and optimizes the cleaning cycle.

Read-write compatible AIT-4 and AIT-3 tapes are listed below:

Sony AIT-4 backup tapes
SDX4-200C , SDX4200WWW

Sony AIT-3 backup tapes
SDX3-100W, SDX3-100C

Sony has introduced a new cooling mechanism that protects the component of AIT-4 drive from dust particles and airborne contamination. A special cooling fan pulls air over the circuit boards that produce heat. A built-in shield prohibits dust particles from entering the head/tape interface and tape path. Sony SDX-900V drive features a new cooling path that intelligently redirects the flow of air away from the read-write components of tape drive. This helps to extend the head life and reduce media wear-and-tear, thus making it a smart storage solution for long term protection.
