Best Supplements For Maintaining Muscle
QUESTION: Would you please advise me on some supplements. I'm 81 kgs and want to maintain or slightly increase my muscle mass, however my body fat is currently 19%. I would like to lower body fat dramatically but not lose the muscle.
ANSWER from Paul Mischel, Sport Development Manager.
Without knowing what type of training you are engaged in it is a little difficult to be too specific on supplements. However, here are some general supplements and their reasons for use:
1) GNC Pro Performance Myocell-SR - This is a low carb sustained release protein that takes up to 7 hours to digest. It consists of 100% pure Micellar casein that is undenatured. Key reasons for taking this protein are that it has all the important micro fractions to enhance muscle growth, plus it is so slow in it's digestion that it preserves lean muscle and curbs appetite as well. Another excellent benefit of the Myocell-SR is that due to the slow rate of digestion it increases metabolism as a result of the effort it takes for the body to digest it.
The best way to take this product is as a general use protein between meals and prior ...
... to bed.
2) GNC Pro Performance Leucine - Leucine is an essential amino acid responsible for stimulating muscle growth and has been positively linked with fat loss as well. When leucine is metabolised it yields metabolites like HMB and Ketoisocaproic acid (KIC) which have been proven to preserve lean muscle.
Add a teaspoon of leucine to each protein shake in order to supercharge it's growth and metabolism boosting properties.
3) Simply Nutrition Fish Oil 400 capsules - Fish oil is beneficial for cardiovascular health but it also plays an important role in fat metabolism as well. Fish oils positively affect lean muscle preservation and have been linked with lower levels of body fat.
Take 3 capsules with each protein shake.
4) GNC Green Tea Complex - The ECGC catechins in green tea have been clinically proven to boost metabolism and promote fat loss. The GNC Green Tea Complex is decaffeinated and can be safely taken in the morning and afternoon with out affecting sleep.
Take 2 capsules per day with food.
These suggestions are a good basis from which to start with. Make sure you drink plenty of water and modify your caloric intake.
