Like so many things today purchasing a health insurance plan can be a minefield with an enormous number of providers offering a wide variety of plans and all competing against each other for your business. Naturally the key lies in finding the best plan to meet your particular needs together with those of your family and to do so at the best possible price.

If you are purchasing health insurance for the first time, possibly needing to arrange your own cover after many years of benefiting from coverage under an employer's scheme, then here are 4 simple steps which you absolutely must take if you are to ensure that you get the most suitable affordable health insurance plan.

1. Start off by determining just how much you are willing to pay for a health insurance plan and then base your search for a policy on this sum of money.

If you and your family are all relatively young and in good health then you may well find that it is not all that difficult to find good comprehensive coverage within your reach. However, where you cannot find a policy at the price you are happy to pay, then do not be enticed to ...
... spend more than you can really afford!

Look for a policy which matches your budget!

There are a large number of different plans available today with many different payment structures. It may suit your needs for example to find a policy with a high deductible and low monthly premiums which also qualifies for use in a health savings plan. This would then have the advantage of permitting you to accumulate cash within your policy to meet the cost of future claims and also qualify for tax relief from the IRS.

2. Shop around and look at plans being sold by several different insurance companies. Ensure that any insurer which you are considering provides coverage in your area and will also cover you if you are traveling out of state on business or simply for fun.

3. Once you have pared your search down to two or three possible health insurers, research these companies with care to satisfy yourself that they are reputable and financially secure. In most cases you will be considering major insurers who have been doing business for a very long time and are well-known 'household' names. However, if the insurer you are looking at is not as well known then check them out using a web-based service like that provided by A. M. Best. If you are in any doubt at all about a company then you would probably be best advised to simply drop it from your list of possible insurers.

4. An excellent sign of just how good an insurer is the number of complaints made by displeased policy holders. Obviously any insurance company with a high level of complaints and a lot of displeased plan holders should be avoided and, luckily, you can find this information online at the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's website.

These days health insurance is very much a consumer product and plans come in all shapes and sizes to suit a host of needs. Take the time needed therefore to familiarize yourself with just what is available in your state and seek out the policy which best meets your individual requirements. With a bit of time and some careful looking you will find an excellent and affordable health insurance plan.
