Looking to buy one or two quality kitchen cutlery sets? Then you're taking the right first step - research! You'll need more than one knife as each knife has its own purpose.

Here are the knives you must have:

Chef's Knife

The Chef's, or Cook's, Knife is used for tough tasks like chopping and dicing when preparing food. This knife, in length, generally ranges from 6 to 12 inches. So that you can easily use it on a cutting board, it has a rounded shaped blade. This is your work knife, performing the strenuous, repetitive jobs you need done in the kitchen. Yet, and this is a little knife trivia for you, the Chef's Knife is somewhat infamous as the knife used in the movie Halloween.

The Bread Knife

I'm sure you already know the Bread Knife's life purpose in any of the good kitchen cutlery sets. Correct! To slice bread. It's 8 inches long.

The Paring Knife

At only three inches long, you may think the Paring Knife doesn't bring much value to your kitchen cutlery set. However, don't underestimate it. You'll use it for coring and peeling, which, as any chef knows, is an imperative ...
... kitchen task.

The Utility Knife

The Utility Knife, ranging in length from 4 to 7 inches, has fallen out of favor with chefs. It's too large for exact tasks, which is the Paring Knife's domain and too small to compete with the Chef's Knife for the title of work horse.

The Steak Knife

Perhaps a favorite knife is the Steak Knife - favorite because, other than your personal dining knife, it's the knife closest to the food at meal time. It's used to slice meat at the dinner table prior to serving, quickly easing the hunger pains of your family and dining guests. It's about 5 inches in length.

The Cleaver

The Cleaver, which, to its chagrin, looks rather ominous, is actually a helpful tool to have in the kitchen. It's used for chopping and is durable enough to cut through bone, when necessary.

The Boning Knife

As you may have guessed, or known, you'd use a Boning Knife to remove bones from cuts of meat. Unlike the above mentioned cleaver, which cuts through bone, the boning knife worms its way into small places and literally ejects the bone from the meat. It's about 6 inches long.

The Fillet Knife

If you're a fish eater, then you absolutely can't do without the Fillet Knife in your kitchen cutlery set. It's a larger version, coming in at ten inches in length, of the Boning Knife.

So many knives! But now that you have passed Knives 101, the course they never gave you in high school Home Economics but should have, you are prepared to purchase kitchen cutlery sets for you, your friends and your family!
