Vietnam and WTO Membership: Is a Boom in Textiles and Clothing Around the Corner?
The Chinese sourcing boom is slowing down. In 2005 US textile and clothing imports from China soared in volume by 43.7%. But in the first five months of 2006, growth slowed to a mere 4.1%. A similar slowdown is believed to have occurred in the EU.
There seems little doubt that the imposition of comprehensive quota agreements with China is the cause. Significantly, the USA's quota agreement took effect on January 1, 2006.
The EU's quota agreement was implemented in June 2005 and revised in September 2005. The revision became necessary after the so-called Bra Wars fiasco, when millions of Chinese garments were stranded at EU ports and retailers failed to get the goods they had ordered.
