A walking holiday is the perfect escape from the hubbub of everyday life. If you are looking for some peace and tranquillity, there is nothing better than walking through vast open fields, mountains and valleys, taking in nature’s beauty. There are hundreds of options for walking holidays across Europe. Whether you opt for a holiday in your country or go abroad, planning is essential. There are many things that you need to consider before you can set off on a trekking adventure.

Planning
The first step is choosing between an independent and a guided walking holiday. When it comes to choosing a tour operator, the whole trip becomes hassle free as you don’t have to worry about arrangements concerning logistics, accommodation, transport and food. You can choose to go independently, doing everything the way you want without having to stick to a schedule. You will have to do all the planning in advance so that you face no inconvenience.

Gear
You will need the adequate trekking gear, depending on the place you are heading to. Keep the weather in mind when packing clothes and the terrain ...
... when choosing footwear. In addition, you will need a rucksack, water bottles, rain wear, tents, poles, hat, first aid kit and yes, don’t forget your camera.

Practice
You cannot just get off your couch and head to a walking holiday. You need to get the blood in your legs pumping before you leave. You don’t have to exercise vigorously or exhaust yourself. Just walk for a few minutes, preferably testing your boots and other things. Also, master the use of all the equipment and gear you are taking with you.

Transportation
You need to make the travel arrangements well in advance. Last minute bookings are expensive and planning ahead can save you some money. Book a flight to your destination and arrange for a car or get train passes to get around when you reach there. Since you are going to be walking most of the time, the transportation cost is not going to be exorbitant.

Paperwork
There is a mountain of paperwork to get through for Walking Holidays. There are passports, visas, medical documents and other documentation to get through. You should also obtain travel insurance that includes medical coverage. If you get a tour operator to arrange your holiday, these things are taken care of.

Accommodation
Even though the holiday is a chance to explore nature, you will need a roof over your head in the night. Plus you need to make arrangements for food. If you are going to a new place, you might find it difficult to get everything arranged on arrival. Plan in advance and save yourself the stress of last minute arrangements.

These are some of the things you need to keep in mind when planning for walking holidays.
