Are You Really Eating Right? This May Shock You…
The supermarket is filled with food cures. And the way we eat will dictate our natural health. One way we can improve our nutritional status is to remember the pearls of wisdom that we are taught as children, but then tend to forget over
time. Let's revisit the land of dietary willpower.
The best health advice is driven home in elementary school. Things like: waste not, want not; breakfast is the most important meal of the day; snacking before supper will ruin your appetite. In a new article, researchers show that, while
we know the rules surrounding good eating and proper nutrition, we are not applying them and are hence losing the battle of the bulge.
(Find out why you are prone to eating junk food with the aptly titled, Why You're Prone to "Eating it Anyway".)
The researchers think that eating habits come down to people having actions and behaviors that are contradictory to what they know is good or bad for them. For example, while we know that eating cheeseburgers might be bad for us, the advertising and other signs in our environment (seeing restaurants, wrappers everywhere) give us the ...
... green light to consume.
The focus of the study defined the lay beliefs of Americans with regards to rules about eating. Responses such as not snacking, always eating breakfast, and not wasting food were common responses. These "rules" were weighed against factors such as eating behaviors, body satisfaction, and social desirability. The goal: to figure out North Americans' most important beliefs about eating.
Researchers were surprised to learn that people with higher body mass indices (BMIs) had stronger beliefs associated with the rules than people with lower BMIs. Yet there are plenty of examples in society of people knowing what to
do, but acting in a contradictory manner. While overweight and obese people had stronger beliefs about the rules of eating, the problem was that they didn't follow their beliefs. It comes back, of course, to willpower.
They believe the key to solving obesity is to focus less on repeating the messages about healthy eating habits. Instead, people have to focus on impulsive eating and
resolve to follow the rules we all know. And not to give up.
It's about motivation, changing behaviors, and being willing to change. When you start to see changes in your body that you like, that's one thing. Also, feeling better
about yourself comes through health eating and exercise. It's just a better way to live. And most of us need to consider that more strongly.
