‘Unused & Unloved’, is the title of a new group exhibition examining concepts of neglect, desertion, abandonment or disuse that includes the work of two former Griffith College photography students, 2010 graduate Kieran O’Donoghue and Steve Ryan who completed his studies in 2005.

The exhibition for which the Griffith photographers have had work selected involves the artists using “discarded materials to fashion their pieces, whilst others have used the nature of empty spaces as inspiration for their work.”

PrettyvacanT Dublin the event organisers have promised that “The exhibition will take the form of a large-scale group show incorporating drawing, painting, photography, installation, video and sound art.”

The show is part of Innovation Dublin 2011, which is taking place across Dublin from 17th October to 18th November. The festival “demonstrates Dublin’s capacity to inspire, interact and innovate.”

Kieran O’Donogue
Kieran O’Donogue’s work chosen for the exhibition began as a second year project on Griffth’s BA in Photographic Media ...
... He took photographs of the then empty Meath Hospital in Dublin. This grew into other projects including travelling to Belarus and photographing the area around Chernobyl and then Upper Heyford an abandoned US/RAF air force base in Britain.

If you want to see more of Kieran’s work have a look at O’Donoghue Photography. You an find it at: http://www.odp.ie/.

Steve Ryan
The inspiration for Steven Ryan’s work selected for the show comes from religious statues and grottos. Steve writes that these pieces “are commonly found in housing estates, schools, crossroads, churches, railway crossings and town squares throughout Ireland.”

Steve has spent the last two years “travelling the country exploring the present relationship between these statues and their surroundings” and the images on display are “a selection of work from this ongoing project.”
