Ferrari Ff: Engine, Transmission And Four Wheel-drive System

The Ferrari FF is the new revolutionary four-seat Ferrari, the predecessor of an innovative GT sports car concept featuring exceptional performance and versatility. To the ears of the driver and passengers, the FF’s engine sound is seductively clear and powerful because the intake noise is channeled from the filter casings into the cabin. The Ferrari orchestra playing in this V12 never misses a note regardless of speed or conditions.
The FF ensures Ferrari driving pleasure in low grip surfaces; superb handling in all weather and road conditions, even on slippery, snow or ice surfaces thanks to the Ferrari’s new patented lightweight four wheel-drive system(4RM). The F1 dual clutch gearbox combines the pure driving pleasure of a sequential gearbox with the comfort of an automatic one. Gear-shifting times have been cut to zero and the drop-off in acceleration, which is typically experienced with manual and electrohydraulic gearboxes, has been completely eliminated. The E-Diff is now integrated into the gearbox casing, a solution that contributes reducing the overall car weight. Ferrari’s first four-wheel drive system ...
... shares a CPU with E-Diff and F1-Trac, securing perfect drivability and handling even with extremely slippery, icy or snowy road conditions.
The Ferrari FF 4RM is an entirely new system which transmits torque to all four wheels of the car. Unlike a conventional four-wheel drive system fitted in a front-engine car, the 4RM allows the retention of the traditional mid-front engine architecture, with the rear transaxle connected to the engine by a single driveshaft. Additionally, the new power transfer unit (PTU) for the front wheels is directly connected to the engine and located over the front axle. Such layout allows a 50% saving in weight compared to a traditional four-wheel drive system to better benefit the FF’s weight-to-power ration, as well as maintains a low center of gravity and retains the car weight distribution. The PTU is the 4RM’s main mechanical component: it manages the difference between the engine and wheel speeds, controls the amount of torque sent to the front wheels and distributes it between left and right wheels as required. The PTU gets its power and torque directly from the crankshaft through a system of gearbox ratios. The PTU is also very compact and extremely light with the result that the 4RM weights 50% less than a conventional 4 WD system. The hydraulic gear and clutch actuation system is integrated into the PTU and the F1 dual-clutch gearbox delivering absolutely blistering gear-shifting times and thus an improved system responsiveness.
As every Ferrari, the Ferrari FF has a truly unique design approach and technology innovations to achieve indisputable performance and driving experience. Inquiry about the new FF or Ferrari California today.
