There are an endless number of reasons to want to paint a room—you can be seeking a new look, a change of decor, or preparing a house to be sold or rented. Painting a room is a fairly inexpensive and easy way to raise the value of a room and revitalize it. But that isn't to say there isn't a good deal of prep and work that goes into it. That's why in this post we're going to cover a few helpful painting techniques to improve the process for you.

The Prep Work

Like any home renovation project painting should be proceeded by a good deal of prep work. You should cover the floors of your home, and remove or at least move furnishings from work spaces. You should also clean the walls you're painting. An unclean wall can prevent paint from bonding to a wall correctly. And then it's very important to protect areas from overspray, such as windowsills, doors and outlets. You can remove outlet coverings to provide them with added protection and painting tape can be used to protect the rest. As in all things, the more prep work you do, the less you'll have to clean up later.

Applying the Paint

Another important ...
... step is choosing the right painting utensil for the project. Your choice will hinge on the type and size of room you're painting and how often you plan on painting. For the spur of a moment repaint of a moderately sized room, a paint roller is probably the best choice. But if you have a large painting project ahead of you, or if you paint often you can't go wrong with a paint sprayer. Spraying paint is more advantageous than rolling paint because in the process you'll use less paint, complete the project faster and have lesser recoat times. But paint sprayers are more expensive than rollers so it's a good idea to consider how often you'll be painting before you make the purchase. When applying the paint it's important to make sure all of the coats go on evenly. This is especially true when using a roller—be sure not to add too much paint to it. Be gentle with it and take your time and you'll have a perfectly painted wall in no time.

I hope you've enjoyed this guide and it serves you well in your next painting project!
