Pandarens Have Been Under Design For Five Years

Rob Foote, the experienced designer of wow, also knows well new xpan: Mists of Pandaria. At Blizzcon he answered questions on this new xpan. To our surprise, he said blizzard has been designing pandarens for more than five years. Now let us look at the details of his Q&A.
Why is pandaria? Foote says pandaria is what they really want to design, especially in art aspect. Long before the issue of Warcraft, they have had the idea of pandaren. Models of pandarens began to be designed five years ago. After CTM, they want to come up with something different. Pandaren is such different thing. Pandarens are really cool, even cooler than monsters. What’s more, they want design something in Asian style.
Is pandaren designed for Asians? Foote says now except America, players in other countries are also able to play the same xpan at the same time. This is really advancement of technology. Running in different countries and working orderly, blizzard staff does a great job. He doesn’t think they make pandaren on purpose. They do this just because they think panrens are cool enough. New xpan is a little in Asian style. ...
... There are many Asian things waiting to be added into wow. Early night elf is Asian. He admits it is good opportunity to for designers to devote into the pandaren. They will dig out the Asian culture which is related to pandaren. We still expect players in different countries can enjoy the game.
As an art team, how do you begin to design monk? Different designers may have different opinions on class designing. How do you negotiate? When they begin to design pandaren, monk is a striking theme. At the beginning, they just planned to make Pandaria. After that, they planned to design a new race and new class. They look for many references such as kungfu movies. Brew Master possesses Drunken Stance, while pandaren has totally new animation effect. In fact, the new class has different animation effect. In other classes, 10 spells may have the same animation and different effect. As for monk, everything is different. Each rvaa has unique animation. They wanna make monk different. Their fighting style is their concentration. That is why pandaren has no auto attack.
How does talent system 2.0 influence your team? Foote says they have many things to do. New UI, new icons, new spells and new effects are required. Now they are adjusting some functions of game according to feedbacks.
Don’t you think the new talent system is too simplified? Meaningful items are kept, and unmeaning ones are deleted. Players may think the items that can be chosen is few at the beginning of the game. But soon they will find players play an important role in gaming and more attributes can be made by players themselves.
