Let’s begin with D2. D2 was, like a lot of its contemporaries built as a single difficulty
game. There’s no Nightmare or Hell in Baldur’s Gate or Planescape: Torment. At some point
during production some guy had the stroke of genius of adding on difficulties. But there’s
almost no design work gone into them. For example potions have 5 grades – and the top
grade is dropping by Act 4 Normal. Gems have 4 grades that drop – the top one is dropping
by Act 4 Normal. All the higher difficulties do is tinker with the numbers across the
board: -resists to players, extra random ability per difficulty to random bosses etc etc.So you see gold in D2 was never meant to support a high level economy, the whole game
wasn’t really designed to support high level. They just handicapped players and boosted
mobs but didn’t redesign anything different from Normal.What partly saved gold was gambling, a very potent gold sink. But the economy as has been
stated moved to SoJs. (I think because of duping but we don’t need to argue that). D3 is planned by veterans of the company that ...

D3 will, I think, succeed in making its economy work by keeping Best In Slot out of reach.
First finding the item you want will be hard. The best weapon will be hugely sought after
and the effect of the RMAH is that you either have to pay a very large price or you have
to find it yourself. In D2 you could gamble SoJs for a couple of days to buy a top items.
In this game the item may be worth $1000 – you can only get it off someone if you pay for
it because even a casual player won’t trade you an item worth $1000 for a bunch of spare
legendaries you have for his class. Next it will take a lot of gold and crafting mats to enhance the item to perfect.Then you have to socket it. And work on the gems. It will take a long time to keep
boosting gems up and up until you have a rank 14 one. Then TA DA you have Best in Slot. In one slot. Out of about 20 or so? Then they announce an expansion, raising the level cap to 70 and obsoleting current gear. It’s all about keeping the shiny just out of reach.
