When purchasing a new vacuum cleaner it's very important to make sure you do your homework. There are so many makes and models on the market today and it can be confusing for those who don't know what to look for.

The following are some of the things you should consider as you start your search:

Suction power - This may seem obvious, however it's overlooked by many people. The motor is the important thing here. The power is measured either in amps or watts.

Filtration - This measures how well the vacuum cleaner removes dirt from a surface. Less expensive models will dispense finer particles back into the air. It's important to make sure you invest in a HEPA filter. This is one of the best filters on the market and will help your vacuum perform better.

Bag or Bagless - Bagless vacuum cleans have become very popular over the last few years. Many people don't like them because they're not as traditional, however they work just as well as ones that use bags. It's also important to note that in the long run, it's possible to save money with bagless machines.

Attachments - This is ...
... often overlooked when purchasing a vacuum cleaner. This usually depends on what kind of furniture you have you clean around. It's important to get attachments that will allow you to get into all those hard to reach places.
Weight - Most people prefer light for obvious reasons, however you should be careful. Sometimes the lighter machines won't have the best suction power.
Vacuum Cleaner Type - Upright, canister and stick vacuum cleaners are the three major types. This mostly comes down to personal preference. I recommend testing out all three to see which style you prefer.

Brands - there are so many brands to choose from. Dyson, Shop Vac and Hoover are just a few.

Shopping for a vacuum doesn't have to be a scary experience. With a little research you'll be sure to choose the right one for you.
