Some Factors To Consider When Deciding If Vitamin Supplements Are Right For You
"If you've ever had suspicions about whether you're eating the right kind of food to support a healthy lifestyle, it's probably a good idea to start considering vitamin supplements. When you were growing up, were you taking vitamin supplements but now you don't? Maybe you're no different than the rest of us and are so caught up in trying to get through each day's ever growing pile of work that you just don't have the time to eat right even though you know you should be paying more attention to what you eat. It's so much easier and less time consuming to grab something quick without giving too much thought to whether it's actually good for you.
Vitamin supplements are a perfect way, not to mention a quick and easy way, of making sure that we really are getting the kinds of nutrients we may be missing out on due to what and how we eat. We've been aware of these nutrients for the past 100 years or so and although there's some disagreement among the experts about the benefits of using them and how much and which ones to use, there's more agreement about who should be taking them.

Vegetarians, people taking prescription drugs that interfere with the absorption of important nutrients, smokers, alcoholics, the elderly and dieters are other candidates who could benefit from adding vitamins to their diets. These are only some of the special groups that should consider taking vitamins and that doesn't even include those of us who simply don't have the time to eat properly.
Over the past 30 to 40 years, there's been a lot of empirical research and discussion around whether or not vitamin supplements were effective in preventing major disease such as cancer and heart attacks. Many of the experts have suggested that vitamin supplements taken at mega dose levels are the best approaches for keeping us safe from these types of life threatening diseases. There's still disagreement about the benefits of mega dosing but there's much more agreement about the general benefits derived from vitamins. They are instrumental ingredients to the proper functioning and maintenance of our health and only small quantities are necessary to do the job. In fact, they are called micro nutrients because they are needed at low levels. Another fact is that some vitamins, principally those that are classified as fat soluble can eventually be toxic to life when taken at higher levels because they actually store excess amounts of their nutrients in the body's fat rather than releasing them through urine as happens with vitamins classified as water soluble.
