Grape Seed Extract For Colorectal Cancer Prevention

Colorectal cancer is the second most common malignancy and cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. According to American Cancer Society estimates, thousands of new cases and deaths would have occurred from colorectal cancer every year. Early lab tests showed that grape seed extract may pack a punch against colon cancer.
Colorectal cancer is cancer that starts in either the colon or the rectum. Colon cancer and rectal cancer have many features in common. Since it takes a long time for colon cancer to progress from benign to malignant, there is an opportunity to employ health care strategies in the form of health screenings and supplementation.

Herein, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo anticancer effects and associated mechanisms of grape seed extract against colorectal cancer.
Grape seed extract is a widely consumed dietary supplement in the United States for its several health benefits, and is a rich source of standardized phytochemicals ...
... known as proanthocyanidins. Chemicals found in grape seeds significantly inhibited growth of colorectal tumors in both cell cultures and in mice, according to researchers who have already demonstrated the extract's anti-cancer effects in other tumor types.
According to a study, published in the October 18 issue of Clinical Cancer Research, documented a 44 percent reduction of advanced colorectal tumors in the animals, and also revealed, for the first time, the molecular mechanism by which grape seed extract works to inhibit cancer growth. The authors found that it increases availability of a critical protein, Cip1/p21, in tumors that effectively freezes the cell cycle, and often pushes a cancer cell to self destruct.
Grape seed extract has already been demonstrated to have anti-cancer effects on other tumor types, as well. The skin and seeds of grapes are rich in proanthocyanidins, antioxidant flavonoids that remove harmful free radicals from cells.
In order to maintain your colon health, you should pay attention to what you eat every day. Changing your diet and lifestyle is important. Some evidence suggests that low-fat and high-fiber diets may reduce your risk of colon cancer.
Colon cancer can almost always be caught by colonoscopy in its earliest and most curable stages. Almost all men and women age 50 and older should have a colon cancer screening. Patients at risk may need earlier screening. Colon cancer screening can often find polyps before they become cancerous. Removing these polyps may prevent colon cancer.
