Traffic cones are a necessity when it comes to traffic and road safety

Traffic cones are usually cone-shaped markers placed on roads or footpaths to temporarily redirect traffic in a safe manner. Traffic cones are also called traffic pylons, road cones, highway cones, safety cones, construction cones, witches' hats or safety wizards. Traffic cones are typically used to create separation or merge lanes during road construction projects or automobile accidents. During heavier periods of traffic or for longer periods, more permanent markers or signs may be used if the diversion is to stay in place for a long period of time. Invented in 1914 by Charles P. Rudebaker, traffic cones have always been a vital part of road safety. Traffic cones were originally made of concrete, but today's versions are brightly coloured thermoplastic or rubber cones and are usually a bright orange colour. Modern traffic cones have recently become more environmentally friendly by using PVC from recycled bottles.

What are the various types of traffic cones available today?

There are many different types of traffic cones. Not all traffic ...
... cones are conical. There are also pillar shaped movable bollards which fulfill a similar function as traffic cones. Typical traffic cones are fluorescent "safety" orange but come in bright lime green as well. In addition to bright colours which are ideal for visibility, traffic cones also commonly come with reflective striping around them, to enhance their visibility, especially at night time. Most traffic cones are extremely easy to move or remove. However for times where larger and sturdier traffic markers are needed, construction sites use traffic barrels which are large, plastic orange barrels with reflective stripes which may be weighted down with sandbags. When a lane closure must have a physical barrier preventing cars from accidentally crossing it, then a Jersey barrier is preferred as these are much stronger than traffic cones.
