The most common cause of female hair loss is Telogen effluvium which is thinning of the hair caused by stress. Often the hair loss becomes apparent several months after the trauma when old hair is shed as normal, but is not replaced by new hair growth. The shock or trauma stops the hair follicles functioning as normal. Most of the time this kind of hair loss is temporary, however it can take time for hair to look normal and some women’s hair never recovers completely.

50% of women lose at least some hair immediately after pregnancy, but this is due to the change in the balance of hormones in their body. Luckily, this is usually only temporary and the hair recovers fully within 4-8 months.

Once women pass their 50s hair growth slows down and many women’s hair thins noticeably by the time they reach their 80s or 90s.

More Unusual Causes of Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss, as in men can be caused by a genetic disposition to going bald. By keeping the hair healthy and strong it can be slowed down or made far less noticeable.

Some teenagers suffer from Alopecia areata which is a patchy loss ...
... of hair caused by a fault in the immune system once again it is a temporary condition that normally resolves itself within a few months. Occasionally, older women suffer from this kind of hair loss too.

Treatment Options for Female Hair Loss

Until relatively recently there was little or nothing that could be done about female hair loss, but that has changed in the past few decades. Now even inherited baldness can be treated using Minoxidil and other products. The earlier the treatment starts the better the results are because stopping hair loss is far easier than re-growing hair.

Female hair loss during pregnancy can be helped by maintaining a healthy diet before, during and immediately after pregnancy. If you suffer trauma you can reduce the risk of baldness by realising that you have had a shock and take steps to ensure you relax and sleep well.
