Companies are still looking for people who have proficiency in launching social media campaigns. But the topic of the debate is whether there is such a thing called a social media expert. Sometimes people are involved with startups and they have yet to see the revenue generation and other aspects of their campaigns. That is the reason companies should realize the changed situation, and the changed paradigm. Skill level should get the top priority while hiring someone and not one’s credentials. It is true that the person who spends more time on social media would definitely have an edge over the so called experts, who have learnt it through an outdated manual or a senior who was once doing social media campaign a few years ago. You can’t even say that a Harvard or Stanford guy would be the best fit for the job; in the world of social media it is not true.
It is also true that the company managers who are often the previous generation people, frantically go and seek the social media guys to help evacuate them from the immediate crisis of falling revenues and crumbling clientele. They think that it is a quick fix for all their problems and there is a magic wand with these guys, which will clear the current mess. However it is far from truth.
Social media campaigns should not be performed considering it to be a quick fix or a short term solution to the crisis. Like other things they take time and they also depend on lots of other factors to succeed.
