Your committee has asked you to include a commented reference list in your thesis, and you are confused as you have no idea what it is...

This article will tell you all you have to know relating this, just read on...

A footnoted reference list is a list of references to books, articles, and documents. Each reference is succeeded by a brief (generally about 150 words) expressive and appraising paragraph - the annotation. The purpose of the footnote to the reference is to notify the reader of the application, correctness, and value of the sources cited.

How to write annotated bibliography?

This task calls for the application of several logical skills: to the point explanation, short and snappy examination, and well-versed library study.

First, locate and make a list of all the reference books, publications, and documents that may contain constructive information and ideas on your theme. Examine the items in brief, and carefully review each.

Write a short marginal note that sums up the ...
... fundamental subject and range of the book or article. Contain one or more sentences that (a) appraise the influence or background of the author, (b) comment on the designated audience, (c) compare or contrast this effort with any other paper you have cited, or (d) give details how this exertion brightens up your topic.

Before-writing considerations:

An annotation can be as short as one sentence, and an average footnoted list consists of a citation of work and certain information on the author covering five to six sentences, roughly 150 words. Following things are usually considered before
writing the reference list:

What kind of sources (books, articles, primary documents, Web sites, non-print materials) will be admitted? How many sources can a list comprise of?

Carrying out a hunt for the authors and remembering them

Judging recovered origins by going through them thoroughly and writing down your findings and impressions

Once an ultimate set of sources has been selected, giving full reference data and writing a footnote for each source; make sure that a reference name should not be mentioned more than once

What is it composed of:

Comments begin on the line subsequent to the reference data and may be composed with comprehensive sentences or as verb phrases-again at the good judgment of the teacher. The footnote should comprise nearly all, if not all, of the following:

Clarification of the main intention and importance of the list of references and sources

Brief account on the workings' layout and cognitive content

The speculative foundation and assessment of whether the information on the author is up-to-date

Author's academic / scholastic qualifications

Work's intentional viewers

Importance and worth of the effort as a donation to the subject matter under contemplation

Likely defects or preconceptions in the work

Any noteworthy unusual characteristics of the work (e.g. glossary, appendices, particularly good index)

Your own brief description of the piece of work

Conclusion:

Literature based dissertation usually contain a large list of sources that have to be cited. Literature is a wide subject and contains a lot of information from different authors. You simply have to make a list of all the sources and comment on each of them keeping the above things in mind.
