If you consider it, you might realize that most of the things we enjoy today would not exist without the machine shop and the work that is done there, because we wouldn't have anyone to create all of the components we need to build them. Were it not for all the machinists and their machines, we wouldn't have the vehicles that we drive to get to work and school every day, the computers we use to communicate and find new information, the television sets that allow us to watch movies and play games from the comfort of our own homes, or many other things.
