The recent wireless technology is 802.11n standard with the speed up to 150Mbps, almost 13 times as fast as the legacy 802.11b standard. And the fastest wireless technology adopted to the wireless router today uses three spatial data streams technology delivering the speeds up to 450Mbps. There are few wireless manufacturers today introduce wireless routers with three spatial data streams in each of the bands simultaneously. This is what we call a wireless N900 router, the router that delivers the speeds up to 450Mps each band, doubling the bandwidth up to 900Mbps. If you demand the ultimate speed of wireless network to support your home entertainment devices to work in their best performance, you should choose the wireless N900 router as the center of your network.

One of the wireless routers with N900 technology is Zyxel NBG5715 wireless N 450Mbps dual band concurrent gigabit router. What makes this N900 router different with other wireless N900 routers? Let’s examine the main features of this router compared with new Wndr4500 and TP-Link Wr2543dn.

Speed

All the three routers are engineered using N900 ...
... simultaneous dual band gigabit technology which each band either 2.4GHz or 5GHz work concurrently with the speeds up to 450Mbps. This maximum speed is ideal for streaming high definition video, multiplayer gaming, sharing large files and other networking tasks simultaneously. In addition of high speed wireless connectivity, the three routers are embedded with Gigabit Ethernet ports for reliable wired connection to the router. Any wireless routers which fall under high performance router category include gigabit ports in their LAN and WAN interfaces.

USB Functionality

Thanks to the wireless routers that include two USB ports that let you share both storage and printer at the same time, so you don’t need to change the port each time you need to share storage or printer. With two USB ports you can attach both storage and printer all the time and you are free of sharing the storage and submitting print jobs anytime you want without worrying if the attached device is currently a USB storage or printer.

Zyxel NBG5715 N900 and Wndr4500 N900 both support two USB ports, while TP-Link Wr2543nd includes only one USB port to let you share either a storage device or a printer interchangeably. Regarding the USB port, Wndr4500 provides more value since it is DLNA certified to let you connect any DLNA compliant devices easily including HDTV, Blu-Ray and XBOX.

Guest Network

What do you expect with the Guest network feature of the wireless router? You can create separate SSID – separate network other than your private network to let you grant internet access to your visitors without compromising your internal network. If you require this feature for your home network, Zyxel NBG5715 or TP-Link Wr2543nd is not your router. You should choose Netgear Wndr4500 which supports guest network each band.

VPN Support

The three routers have the same N900 technology even though they are engineered with different wireless antenna technologies, but the speed is the same. USB port is also the standard port all the three routers include, even though they have different numbers of USB ports.

So what are the main differences between Zyxel SBG5715 and the other two routers? The answer is the native VPN support. Standard wireless routers support VPN pass through that pass the VPN protocols. But Zyxel supports native VPN (in addition of VPN pass through) to let you create secure tunneling via the internet up to 5 IPSec VPN tunnels from remote users to the network. This feature normally exists in business class routers for inter-site communications between main office to the branch office.

Summary

The Zyxel SBG5715 is a new wireless N900 router which supports simultaneous dual band, gigabit interfaces both LAN and WAN ports, two USB ports for storage and pr inter and support native VPN up to 5 secure tunneling.

If native VPN support is not your main requirement, you may consider TP-Link Wr2543nd or Netgear Wndr4500 the new wireless N900 routers for delivering ultimate wireless speeds. By Ki Grinsing – an MCSE and CCNA engineer.
